Celebrating Degrassi: Soma Bhatia

somab

Soma Bhatia portrays Goldi Nahir on Degrassi. Check out our chat with her as we continue to celebrate Degrassi.

You recently just turned 18 so hope you had an amazing 18th birthday! How did you celebrate your birthday?

I did have an amazing birthday! My friend from acting class and I have close birthdays so we celebrated together. We invited all the Degrassi cast and all our acting class friends for sushi.

What similarities if any do you have with Goldi?

We both are very passionate people. Goldi sets a goal in her mind and often achieves it. I’m very much a go-getter like her.

What’s it like being a part of such a legendary franchise?

It’s a dream come true for me because I grew up watching this show, and so did my mom! Degrassi was a part of my childhood and its special knowing that can help carry this legacy.

If you could have a super power what would it be?

To be able to eat without getting full or being unhealthy and to make junk food healthy. I just love food!

What’s your biggest fear?

My biggest fear is losing people I love.

What would be a good theme song for your life?

The song “Ride” by Lana Del Rey. Well, any Lana song, I’m a huge fan.

What can we expect from the upcoming new episodes?

A lot more on self discovery. That’s what high school is all about. Finding your true self and being happy with it.

Celebrating Degrassi: Chelsea Clark

Season 2 of Degrassi: Next Class premiered on Netflix just a few weeks ago. In honor of my love for the iconic hit Canadian series, I decided to reach out to some of the cast. The first cast member is Chelsea Clark. She plays the lovely and confident yet manipulative Esme Song. Check out our little chat.

So you just finished up high school this year and that included the big prom. How was prom?

Prom was super great! It was a nice intimate venue and everyone really got together and looked great as our one last hurrah.

Esme was such a negative influence on Miles but a really interesting character. What should we expect from Esme moving forward?

We can expect to see sides of her that are really different than the first two seasons. Her interactions with the other characters will be most interesting.

Question from Twitter user @DegrassiFeels: If you could write an episode about your character, what would you make your character do?

I would want to write a scene of her interacting with her family or no family we don’t know! Also crazy stunts would be AWESOME (Scuba diving, bungee jumping, the whole shebang.

If you could swap places with any of the characters that attend Degrassi, who would you swap with?

I’d swap with any of the Hollingsworth family members. They’re great characters AND get a pool!

If you could have a super power what would it be?

Breathe underwater

What’s one of your biggest/weirdest fears?

I’m terrified of rodents

What would be a good theme song for your life?

I don’t care if it doesn’t fit but I’d love for it to be the 6teen theme song

Degrassi 13C Finale Interview #4

Just when you thought it was over. I have one more Degrassi interview left for all of you. I couldn’t let you all celebrate this spring finale tonight without interviewing another individual who seems to be at a crossroads between two guys. Olivia Scriven is Maya Matlin, one of the handful of Sophomores who will play a huge role tonight’s episode.

maya

Jr: Wow where do I begin with Maya. She has been through so much and is only a sophomore. What have you seen in her that has changed from when we first met her back in season 11?

Olivia: Maya has not only gone through the necessary rites of passage that a 13 or 14 year old usually goes through, but she also dealt with issues (such as Cam’s death) that are really going to take a toll on the rest of her life. I think that since freshman year, she has looked at everything way more seriously, and values all her relationships with others. She is much stronger now and I think has way more self-esteem, but she thinks about everything too much, and over analyzes situations. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but I don’t think she will ever completely return to that innocent little girl we saw at the beginning.

Jr: Who do you ship Maya with?

Olivia: I don’t know if this is allowed… but I ship Maya with Maya! I think that since the beginning of high school, her decisions have been largely impacted on by the boys surrounding her life, and those decisions haven’t always turned out so well. I think right now, Maya should focus on her individuality before jumping into another relationship.

Jr: What is a story-line you want to see Maya go through?

Olivia: I’d love to see Maya and Grace try to run away or something, and end up like, living in a tent somewhere. That’d be really awesome and weird. It would be a really fun acting duet too, with only two people in a really secluded area.

Sparks Will Fly pt 2 (Premiers Tonight, at 9:00pm ET)

Fireworks begin at Wild Wild West Night when Clare makes her decision known with regards to Drew and Eli. Zoë struggles to stand up for herself. Miles and Zig face off in a showdown for Maya’s heart.

New episodes of Degrassi continue this summer with the remainder of season13.

Degrassi 13C Finale Interview #3

Yesterday was all about Aislinn Paul and Ana Goljia. All good things must come to an end. Today marks the end of my Degrassi interviews just in time for the spring finale tonight. I bring to you an interview from another new entrant to Degrassi this season. His character is currently feuding with Zig Novak over Maya Matlin’s heart. Will he win? This is the question that only Eric Osborne knows the answer to.

milesh

Jr: What are the similarities and differences between you and your character Miles?

Eric: For the most part, Miles and I are dissimilar. We are very different in the way we act and the way we view the world. However, sometimes I can relate to the way he is feeling and even share similar thoughts. For the most part, Miles is only a part of me I bring out for performance.

Jr: How do you think Miles stays afloat when it comes to the situation regarding his father’s affair, and his recent relationship struggle?

Eric: On the subject of the affair that Miles’ father is having with Andrea, Miles is very conflicted. He is very hurt and disappointed to find out what his father is capable of and he definitely shows it. But he knows he needs to be strong for his siblings and to prove to himself that he is strong enough to persevere. Miles is trying to be mature in order to protect his family and prove to himself that he can be mature.

Jr: There is this love triangle or battle of sorts that involves Miles, Maya, and Zig. Can Miles and Zig co-exist in Maya’s world at the same time?

Eric: I believe that for Maya, she would love to believe in the possibility of having both Miles and Zig. She feels responsible for both of them and cares for both of them. However, Miles and Zig would never be satisfied with “sharing” Maya, and in their minds, whoever ends up with her is the victor. For Miles, it is just as much about getting Maya as it is about defeating Zig. Therefore, it is impossible for Zig and Miles to co-exist and share Maya.

Degrassi 13C Finale Interview #2

Earlier today I posted my interview with Aislinn Paul, which you should go check out if you already haven’t. This next interview is with one of the newest members of Degrassi. She joined the team for season 13 and her character has already suffered through a personal life-changing moment in just her Sophomore year. A lot of you requested an Ana Goljia interview, here it is.

anagoljia

Jr: Describe the moment you found out that you landed the role as Zoe on Degrassi?

Ana: When I got the call from my agent saying I got the part, I was in the car with my mom in the parking lot of my dentist. I remember at first being in complete and utter shock…I was speechless. After I got off the phone and the idea sunk in a bit, I screamed like no tomorrow! I was on cloud nine!

Jr: What do you like about playing Zoe?

Ana: I love playing Zoe because she is so far from who I am in reality. It’s a real challenge to play someone so manipulative and complex. She is so unpredictable and you never know what she has on her mind and up her sleeve.

Jr: Degrassi has revisited the sensitive topic of sexual assault. Zoe goes through such a difficult story-line not realizing at first that she was sexually assaulted. How did you react once you read that your character would have to endure this? How did you prep yourself for such an emotional plot, and how do you think this will or has impacted Zoe’s life at Degrassi?

Ana: I was completely heartbroken for Zoe when I found out what had happened at the party. Unfortunately, this happens to teens around the world every day, so the whole team at Degrassi approached this block with the utmost care and sensitivity that it deserved. Getting into character for this block was by far the hardest thing I’ve had to do in my 9 years of acting. I watched countless films and interviews with assault victims to help get into that mindset. When on set, I stayed completely separate from cast and crew so I could really feel helpless and lonely. I remember always feeling so drained by the end of the work day and dreading the fact that I had to do it all over again the next day. It was certainly a challenge, but I am so honored I had the opportunity to do this storyline and help get an important message out there. All that said, I think Zoe has learned who her friends are now and will treat them with the respect they deserve; however, I do not think this event will change who she is as a person.
